Urgent Notice to Visa Applicants using Postal Service




Welcome to the passport services of the High commission of India, London. Applications for Passport services can be made at the Passport Services Counter at the High Commission, which is open from 0930 hours to 1300 hours on all working days. Please reach the High Commission Security Counter early to obtain the Entry Token for the Passport Services Counter, as these are issued in limited numbers. We currently issue 100 tokens for Passport Services. Passports, after completion of the service requested, can be collected from the Passport Services Counter between 1500 and 1600 hours on the date indicated. Applications can also be sent by post but must be accompanied by a stamped (for recorded delivery or registered post), self-addressed envelope.

Fee for passport services is accepted at the Passport Service Counter only in cash and postal orders. In case, you are paying in cash please bring exact change. Only crossed postal orders in favour of the High Commission of India, London are accepted if the application is sent by post. Application forms and suggested formats for affidavits etc. can be downloaded from this website or obtained from the Passport Services Counter. All original documents must be accompanied with a photocopy. Note 1: Copies of the passport(s) (except blank pages) should be submitted in all cases alongwith the application, when applying for any passport service. In case your latest passport is an additional booklet issued to the original passport, you are also required to submit all the additional booklets and the original passport.

Note 2: Applications sent by post, normally take 3 - 4 weeks for processing, if complete. In case of any shortfall in your application, you will be contacted by us. Please contact us in case you do not receive the passport in 4 weeks time. Applications should be sent along with Self addressed stamped Recorded or Special delivery envelope and postal order in favour of High Commission of India, London

Note 3: Affidavits in connection with various passport services can be sworn at the High Commission itself for an addtional fee of £ 8.00 if you are able to furnish sufficient documentation to the satisfaction of the Consular Office to establish your identity. Such document may include copy of Indian passport, driving licence, letter from employer certifying the applicant's identity, damaged passport, social security card, letter of introduction from two Indian residents abroad in respect of the identity and citizenship of the applicant, a certificate issued by the concerned educational/training institution to the effect that the individual is a bona fide student of that institution and that he is of Indian nationality as per academic records submitted by him at the time of admission (in case of students), and air ickets/boarding passes/itinerary/visa copy (in case of short time visitors). In case the Consular Officer is not satisfied with the identity/photo of the applicant, the applicant is required to obtain the affidavit attested/sworn before a Notary Public.

FAQ on Passport Services


Re-issue of Passports

A new passport can be issued on the expiry, or up to one year before expiry, of any passport, which had an initial validity of 10 years. It is necessary to have a valid visa on the previous passport. To apply for a new passport, you need to fill out the application form along with two latest identical passport-size photographs.(Attestation not necessary) You also need to enclose your current or recently expired passport (in case your latest passport is an additional booklet issued to the original passport, you are also required to submit all the additional booklets plus the original passport) and the fee of � 27.00. if you want an ordinary, 36 page, passport or � 34.00 if you want a jumbo, 60 page passport. If all the pages of your passport have been exhausted, then also you will be issued a new passport of ten years validity from the current date for a fee of �27. This will also apply for all other cases like 'change in appearance, name, date of birth, place of birth, signatures etc.', where a new passport booklet is required.

In case more than one year has elapsed since the expiry of the passport you will also need to submit an affidavit in the prescribed format stating that you have not acquired British Nationality and a letter from the British Home office confirming the same (Please refer to Note.3 above).

Issue of duplicate passports or Emergency Certificates in lieu of damaged or lost passports

If you are on a short visit to the UK or a work permit holder or a student and have lost or damaged your original passport, you can approach the High Commission for either a short validity passport or an Emergency Certificate. You will need to fill out the application form along with 8 latest identical passport-size photographs. You also need to provide a Police Report regarding lost or stolen passport, and a sworn affidavit in the prescribed format. The affidavit can be sworn at the High Commission itself for an additional fee of £ 8.00 and you do not need to go to a notary public (Please refer to Note.3 above). You may also provide a photocopy of your lost passport/expired previous passport, or any other document proving your Indian nationality.

In case you are resident in UK, you will, in addition, have to supply an affidavit and a letter from the British Home Office certifying non-acquisition of British nationality (Please refer to Note.3 above). Proof of legal stay permission in UK is also required. The fee for an ordinary, 36 page passport is �84.00 and �94.00 for a 60 page, Jumbo passport. The fee for Emergency Certificate is �4.00.

Renewal of passports, which were, initially issued for a short validity (less than five years) on emergency etc.

For renewal of such passports, you need to fill out the application form alongwith two latest identical passport-size photographs. You will also need to enclose your current or recently expired passport. There is no fee for this service.

Change in appearance

If your appearance has changed significantly since your last passport was made, you can apply for a fresh passport or an additional booklet with a more recent photograph. You will need to fill out the form meant for a new passport along with four latest identical passport-size photographs. You also need to enclose your current passport and a sworn affidavit in the prescribed format. (Please refer to Note.3 above).

The fee for this service is �27.00 if you want an ordinary, 36 page passport or �34.00 if you want a jumbo, 60 page passport. The fee for additional booklets is �14.00 if you want an ordinary 36 page additional booklet or �17.00 if you want a jumbo 60 page additional booklet.

Change of name subsequent to marriage

If your surname has changed subsequent to marriage and you want a new passport or an additional booklet in your married name you will need to fill out the form meant for a new passport along with four latest identical passport-size photographs. You also need to enclose your current passport, your original marriage certificate with a photocopy and your spouse's passport. The fee for this service is �27.00 if you want an ordinary, 36 page, passport or �34.00 if you want a jumbo, 60 page passport. The fee for additional booklet is �14.00 if you want an ordinary 36 page additional booklet or  �17.00 if you want a jumbo 60 page additional booklet.

In case you do not want a new passport, you can also apply for an observation regarding your change of surname to be entered in your existing passport. For this you need to fill out the form meant for Miscellaneous Services and the fee is only �7.00. The documentary requirements are the same as those mentioned above.

In case you wish to change your first name/surname or both your first name and surname, you will be required to place advertisements to that effect in a prominent daily newspaper of the area of your residence in the UK and a prominent daily newspaper of the area of your permanent address. You would be required to submit these advertisements (newspaper page) along with a sworn affidavit in the prescribed format. (Please refer to Note.3 above).

Passports for Children born in the UK

Children's name cannot be entered on their parent's passport any more. For a child to be given an Indian passport he/she must have been registered with the Consular Section of the High Commission within one year of birth. For procedure regarding registration of children, please refer to the Consular Services section of this website. To apply for issue of a new passport to a child, you must fill out the application form for a new passport along with four latest identical passport-size photographs. You also need to enclose passports of both parents and the child's birth certificate (full version), along with a photocopy. The fee for this service is �17.00.

Miscellaneous Services on existing valid passports

Miscellaneous Service is addition or amendment to the existing passport such as grant of 'Emigration Clearance Not Required (ECNR), deletion of child/children's name from the mother/father's passport, change of present/permanent address, inclusion/deletion of spouse's name, change of surname subsequent to marriage etc. or any other observation required in the existing passport regarding the personal/passport particulars. For Miscellaneous Service, you will need to fill out the Miscellaneous Service application form, alongwith two latest identical passport-size photographs. You will also need to enclose your current validity passport and document (original plus one photocopy) in support of the required service. The fee for each Miscellaneous Service is � 7.00.
